TWID #28: Exploring Spatial Audio
Using a multi channel audio system to combine sound and visuals.
This week I had access to a multi channel audio system and the possibility to experiment with spatial audio for my visuals.
Envelop for Live
While it is not so easy to get access to a multi channel audio system. There are some softwares you can use to do spatial audio. In my case I was using Envelop for Live which is a free and quite simple to use.
It is an open source audio production framework for spatial audio composition and performance and comes as some Max for Live devices that you can add to your projects and then you can control the position of sounds with it.
Potential for Visuals
While I had limited time with the system I managed to control parameters in my visuals and at the same time pan the sounds around in 3D space.
This worked especially well with the 3D scans I am doing right now. So I got really excited since it opens up a space, where the visuals can affect the sound but not too direct, which gives the ability to be an indirect part of the music.
Combining visuals with spatial audio is a great experience, since you can see and hear things moving at the same time.
Conclusion
This is a really interesting topic that I want to spend more time with. Let’s see if I manage to get access to such as system more often to explore its possibilities.
Other thing I did this week.

That’s it for this week. Hope you liked it.
